General description
Single chain glycoprotein present in normal serum at about 23 mg/100 ml. Principal physiological inhibitor of thrombin. Present at higher levels in plasma than in serum because it complexes with thrombin during coagulation. Functions by inhibiting proteolytic enzymes involved in blood coagulation and fibrinolysis, including Factor Xa, plasmin, thrombin, and trypsin. Potency is strongly enhanced by heparin.
